Louwelsa line
Hand-painted earthenware, colored slip underglazes, high-gloss
overglaze
Louwelsa ware was the first art pottery made by Weller and was produced in over 500 shapes and sizes. It featured a rich brown to yellow background with slip painting of fruit, flowers, and Indian portraits. The Louwelsa coloring and style mimicked the more expensive art pottery made by Rookwood. Jardinières--large decorative pots for plants-- like this one, along with umbrella stands and decorative tiles were highly popular at the turn of the century.
