By 1902 Pickard china was carried by over 1000 department stores in the United States, including Marshall Field in Chicago. In 1917 Pickard, in conjunction with Marshall Field, put out a booklet entitled "The Art of Entertaining," illustrated with many Pickard patterns that would be appropriate for a variey of social functions. This tea set and bowl were decorated in the Art Nouveau or "New Art" style popular from the 1890s to the 1920s. It was characterized by elaborate "whiplash" curves and organic designs.
