Priest dying
How did the British gain control of Illinois?

Father Meurin renounced the Jesuits and turned to another order and was allowed to continue his mission. But he was right. Many things were changing. Within a year the Illinois country became a British colony, ceded to Great Britain as one of the spoils of war at the close of the French and Indian Conflict.

His was an increasingly difficult life under the Protestant rulers. Many French Catholics fled west of the Mississippi to Spanish land where Catholics were more welcome. He remained, and though increasingly isolated and enfeebled by age, Father Meurin practiced his beliefs in his adopted homeland until his death at age 70.
