How did the Native Americans view the Jesuits?

The Indians come to me. "What shall become of us?" they cry. "What will happen to our children if there is no Holy Father?" And what should I tell them? We taught them to believe, and they trusted us. And now we are going to abandon them.

I am ashamed. All my brothers believe we have no choice. Perhaps it is the will of God. There are so few of us; perhaps it is too much to think that we could make a stand. One cannot fight alone. Who knows, the British and the Spanish have their own design. I fear the life we have known is changing, and this is only the beginning.

I cannot hold back the will of God. But what is it?
