State Mineral
Calcite?
That's not it. Calcite, although important in the state, is not the State Mineral of Illinois.
Calcite (calcium carbonate) is a very common mineral in Illinois. It is the primary mineral that makes up the rock limestone. Limestone is an abundant bedrock in the state. Calcite is a relatively soft mineral that breaks easily. When pure it is clear or white; however, it comes in many colors.
