State Fossil
Lepidodendron?
Wrong. The State Fossil of Illinois is not the bark of the "Lepidodendron tree" (scientific name Lepidodendron spp.)
The fossilized remains of "Lepidodendron trees" (which is a type of club moss) make up about 90% of the coal found in Illinois. These fossils are about 300 million years old. Find out more about Lepidodendron in the Mazon Creek Fossils exhibit.
