The longnosed gar is found in much of eastern North America, including in the Mississippi River system, the Great Lakes, and the Saint Lawrence River system. It can be found throughout the state of Illinois. The body of this fish is covered with hard, shiny, diamond-shaped scales. Close relatives of this fish have been around for about 100 million years.
