The Greater Prairie Chicken?
Incorrect. The Greater Prairie Chicken (scientific name Tympanuchus cupido) is not the State Bird of Illinois.
Until the 1870s, the Greater Prairie Chicken was probably common in most of the state. Today, it is found only on refuges in Jasper and Marion Counties. As the name implies, the Prairie Chicken was an integral part of the tall-grass prairie ecosystem. As the tall-grass prairie was eliminated so was this bird.
