1 Leaving for war [5k]
Who was Philander King?

It is 1863, and the Civil War leaves few families untouched.

Philander King Sound and his wife, Margaret, own a small farm in northwestern Illinois near their parents.

Though Illinois has raised large numbers of volunteers, the federal government has had to draft more. It is the first draft in the history of the new nation, and Philander King is concerned about his family and what will happen to them if he is drafted.
