Jug, 1877

Made by Wallace Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL
Wheel-thrown and constructed stoneware, salt and brown slip glazes

Snake jugs, as they were known, were perhaps the most bizarre pieces produced by the Anna Pottery. Wallace Kirkpatrick is believed to have made the jugs because of his interest in snakes and his mastery of clay sculpture. The Kirkpatrick brothers strongly believed in temperance, and the snakes "moving" across the surface of the jug were meant to be a warning to those tempted by strong drink.
