Pioneer or Westward Ho pattern
Pressed glass
With the development of machinery to press glass into decorative forms, thousands of patterns in glassware were offered to Victorian consumers. This pattern with its Indian, buffalo, and log cabin was one of a few that featured American subjects. Glass dishes showed off the brightly colored fruits, cakes, and candies on the dessert table. Covered dishes protected the sweets from flies. About 20 different forms, from sauce dishes to covered compotes, were made in this pattern. A set of 14 different dishes sold for $10 in 1880.
