It looks like Mr. McLaughlin is ready to send them to New Orleans. Poor souls! No wonder they were on my kitchen floor. What's ahead if they are sold, I can only imagine. The laws of this state are very hard on those who liberate slaves. Should the state become chargeable for their support, anyone who liberates a slave must meet the expenses. It could easily come to more than John and I can afford. Slaves! Oh, my! I can't believe we are even considering this! |
