This sideboard was used in the dining room as a serving table and a storage cupboard for silver, linens, and serving pieces. An artful arrangement of silver, crystal, and fine china was proof of the hostess's social status and genteel taste. This early Empire-style piece features massive corner columns carved with classical elements--acanthus leaves, ionic capitals, and lion-paw feet--and topped with patriotic American eagles. The splashboard at the back of the serving surface is carved with twin cornucopia, symbols of abundance and prosperity.
