Jars, 1600-1790

Made in China
Porcelain, carved teak base and lid

Many of these antique jars lost their original porcelain lids and were refitted with wooden lids and imported to decorate American homes in the popular Oriental fashion. The melon-shaped jar was made about 1600, during the Ming dynasty, and is decorated with a lotus scroll pattern. Another, decorated with stalks of bamboo and chrysanthemums in blue glaze and with a rock in a rich red glaze, is from the Chi'ing dynasty, about 1750 to 1790.

Gift of Helen and Eliza Condell from the Thomas Condell collection, Springfield, IL (700874, 700862, 700993)
