Hoops began in the 1400s when some child began playing with the metal or wooden hoops from barrels. In the 1800s, children used a "skimmer," or stick, to push the hoop along a road or to spin the hoop up into the air. With much practice, it is possible to throw the hoop into the air, then catch it with the skimmer.
