This bed belonged to Sarah J. Carpenter who lived with her father William on the corner of Seventh and Carpenter streets in Springfield. William owned a sawmill and gristmill on the Sangamon River in the area now known as Carpenter Park. After he died in 1859, Sarah continued to live in her father's house until her death in 1932. Often large, mirrored bureaus and washstands were made to match such beds.
