Shells, 1850-1890

Hand-painted and carved

The Victorian home was considered a place of education and culture for both the family and visitors. Items such as this large shell, painted with a landscape, represented the family's interest in the natural world. The small shell, engraved with the Lord's Prayer, illustrated not only the natural world with all its wonders but also the piety of the family that displayed it.

Large shell: Anonymous donor (704713)
Small shell: Gift of Mrs. William T. Lusk, New Canaan, CT (701974)
