By the 1870s the seven-piece parlor set had become very popular in American homes. A typical set included a sofa, a gentleman's arm chair, a smaller lady's chair and four small armless chairs. Prices varied with the choice of upholstery material and the complexity of the tufting. Even the simplest sets cost about $100, putting them out of the reach of most wage earners. This set belonged to the Hill family of Bloomington, IL. William Hill was a physician.
