Six goblets, 1865-1885

Engraved blown glass

These expensive, hand-crafted goblets reflect the social status of their owner, John Todd Stuart, a prominent Illinois lawyer and legislator. From Stuart's books, Abraham Lincoln studied law; and in 1837, Lincoln became Stuart's law partner. Lincoln married Stuart's cousin, Mary Todd. During the Civil War, Stuart served as a member of Congress. After Lincoln's assassination, he assisted with funeral ceremonies and superintended the building of the Lincoln tomb. He lived most of his life with his wife Mary in Springfield where he died in 1885.

Gift of Evelyn L. Mitchell, widow of John Todd Stuart IV, Cranbury, NJ (1986.65)
