Doll crutch, ca. 1860

Made by John Scott Russell, Morgan County, IL
Hand-carved wood

John Russell made this crutch for his niece's doll that had a broken leg. Parents and relatives often made doll clothing, doll houses, and furniture, and a variety of toys and games for the children. This crutch was probably made to comfort a young child whose doll could not easily be mended.

Gift of Miriam Russell, Jacksonville, IL (747077)
