Cot, ca. 1880

Made by Samuel Wilson Duff, Jackson County, Illinois
Wood, twine

Women were responsible not only for care of the house but also for care and feeding of the family. All of the cooking, preserving, mending, and cleaning had to be accomplished while watching many small children. This folding cot was made for young Amma Della Pyron of Kincaid Township in Jackson County by her grandfather. She was placed on it to sleep while her mother worked in the kitchen or outside.

Gift of Amma Della Pyron McBride family, Jackson County, IL (1980.52.1)
