Indians at fort

At the fort, I went directly to the men while the Indians rode around the buildings. Pennington, who was in command, wanted every man to get a club and fight, but I was able to persuade them to offer to shake hands instead.

When the Indians came near, we stretched out our hands, and I don't mind telling you, I was more than a little fearful. But they took our offer and we shook hands together. Then they rode off towards Rock Island.
